PAC Engages Presidential Candidates Ahead of Peace Declaration Signing

As Malawi moves towards the 2025 General Elections, the Public Affairs Committee (PAC), a quasi-religious body that promotes democracy, peace, unity, and development through civic education, mediation, and advocacy, has commenced interface meetings with presidential candidates in preparation for the upcoming National Prayers for the Signing of the Peace Declaration. The event is scheduled for 8th September 2025 at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

The first engagement was held on Friday at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre with UTM Party President, Dalitso Kabambe.

In his opening remarks, PAC Chairperson, Monsignor Dr. Patrick Thawale, expressed gratitude to UTM for accepting the invitation. He emphasized that as Malawi approaches the polls, electoral peace building is more critical than ever.

“National prayers on peace provide a framework for conflict prevention and ensure both peaceful democratic elections and a political process that serves the national good. We present to you the draft of the peace declaration to be signed on 8th September 2025,” said Dr. Thawale.

He added that it is PAC’s hope that each of the presidential candidate sign the peace declaration, which serves as a goodwill and a basis for mediation and dialogue in the event of political or electoral disputes.

On his part, UTM President Dalitso Kabambe commended PAC for its pivotal role in Malawi’s democratic journey since 1992. He confirmed UTM’s participation in the National Day of Prayers and signing ceremony.

“We welcome the document and we will live by it as we are a peaceful party. This is the time that the nation needs PAC. You have a crucial role to play as we head towards the elections so that we have peaceful, fair and credible elections that will please Malawians,” said Kabambe.

PAC plans to meet with all the 17 presidential candidates approved by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

The National Day of Prayers and signing of peace declaration will be graced by solidarity statements from the United Nations, the African Union/Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Malawi Peace and Unity (MPUC).
